Bolus Hill Offers Fantastic Views

Wow, it has been a while since I posted here last, but I could not let today’s hike go unnoticed. Kaya and myself decided it was the perfect day to check out Bolus Hill, west of Ballinskelligs at the near western edge of the Iveragh peninsula.

I had walked the well-signposted Bolus Loop walk before, a lovely loop walk of about 9km starting from the Skellig Ring near St Finian’s Bay. Today, we wanted to go up to the top of the hill and we did it from the other side, from Cill Realaig (Killdreelig, Ballinskelligs). Cill Realaig is an old deserted village where 8 cottagess were renovated in the 90’s and now host an “artists retreat”. The setting overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay is spectacular.

The small road into Cill Realaig gets narrow beyond the former village but caries on towards Bolus Head. A right turn at a farmer’s gate leads up the col and from there on the summit of the hill (410m) is only a short scramble away. The views are spectacular: the Beara peninsula, Derrynane, Waterville, the Blasket Islands and of course the Skellig Islands were all present. Today was especially clear which meant we could appreciate the outlines of Mt Brandon and Carrantuohill. Kaya also appreciated the Bolus Barracks and lookout tower. Overall a very rewarding short climb.
